Common questions

What is the KNM exam?

KNM means Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij (Knowledge of Dutch Society). It is one of the five inburgering exams. You answer questions about how the Netherlands works: housing, healthcare, work, history, and everyday rules.

How do I practice for the KNM exam?

Each module starts with the key Dutch terms, then exam-format questions about life in the Netherlands. That is more useful than only reading a handbook. On Inbu you practice in short sessions, with explanations when you miss an answer. More on how the exam is set up, in English: KNM exam practice (guide).

Is KNM a language exam?

No. KNM tests knowledge of Dutch society, not grammar. The questions are in Dutch, so you need to read them, but the content is about institutions, rules, and daily life in the Netherlands.

Can I practice KNM for free?

Yes. You can start for free, no credit card. You can also try a free sample with no account: short Dutch questions in exam format. Try a free sample. After that you continue in the same format: short questions, instant feedback, at your own pace.

Do I need to pass KNM for inburgering?

For many tracks, KNM is a required part next to Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. What applies to you is in Mijn Inburgering (and, under the 2021 Act, sometimes in your PIP). Do not invent your own package — check DUO. Practice KNM separately: it is a different skill from language.

What does interactive practice in exam format mean on Inbu?

You practise the question type for this exam part in a short session, with feedback. Inbu writes these questions. They are not official DUO items, and a practice score is not a pass result. For the official benchmark, use the practice exams on inburgeren.nl.

How do I start this part for free?

The longer practice on this page starts with a free account. If you do not know where you stand, take the level check. That result is a training signal, not an official DUO result.
