      What you need to know

Making questions with intonation and inversion

At A0 you can already ask simple questions. You can do this in two easy ways: just change your intonation, or put the verb first.

      When you use it

    1. In short, friendly questions at work or in class
    2. When you want to check information or ask for help
    3. In everyday situations like the doctor, the shop, or the gemeente
    4. Examples

    5. Intonation question: Jij werkt morgen thuis?
You work from home tomorrow? (rising intonation)

    6. Inversion question: Werk jij morgen thuis?
Do you work from home tomorrow?

    7. Inversion with other verb: Heb jij de presentatie al gestuurd?
Have you already sent the presentation?

    8. Quick tips

    9. For inversion: put the verb first, then the subject: Kom jij mee?, Hebben jullie tijd?
    10. Intonation questions are more informal. In e-mails, use the full inversion question.
    11. Keep questions short and clear; long questions are harder for native speakers too.
